How to turn off tracking on an LG TV
TL;DR
- Difficulty: 2/5
- Time estimate: about 10 minutes
- LG's ACR runs on two things that work together: Live Plus, the feature that recognizes what is on screen, and the Viewing Information agreement, the consent that allows the collection. Turn Live Plus off AND withdraw the Viewing Information agreement, then limit ad tracking. Skipping either pass can leave tracking in place.
Difficulty and time above are our rough estimates, not LG figures. For the bigger picture on how TV tracking works, see the hub guide.
One thing in your favor before you start: LG's own statement (September 12, 2026) says ACR, voice recognition, and interest-based advertising are optional features that are not enabled by default, and that consent can be withdrawn in settings. If you never agreed to them during setup, they may already be off. The three passes below are how you check, and how you withdraw consent if you did agree.
Step-by-step
This takes three short passes. Do all of them, in order. A pass may be missing entirely on some models; if a menu or agreement named here is not on your set, move on to the next pass.
Pass 1: Turn off Live Plus
- Open All Settings.
- Go to General, then System, then Additional Settings. This layout is webOS 6 and later (2021 and newer sets).
- Turn OFF "Live Plus." This is the feature that recognizes what is on screen. LG says the recognition works by audio fingerprinting and does not collect screenshots or screen recordings.
On older sets (2020 and earlier, webOS 5 and earlier) there is no System step: go to All Settings, then General, then Additional Settings, and turn OFF "Live Plus" there.
Pass 2: Withdraw the Viewing Information agreement
Viewing Information is not a second feature. It is the consent agreement behind the collection: in Consumer Reports' words, the Viewing Information agreement "powers LG's Live Plus feature." Turning the feature off in Pass 1 without withdrawing this agreement can leave LG authorized to collect viewing data, so do this pass too.
- Open All Settings, then Support, then Privacy & Terms, then User Agreements.
- Find Viewing Information and turn it OFF (uncheck or withdraw the agreement).
Routes vary by model. On some sets User Agreements sits under General, then System. On 2019 and earlier sets, look under All Settings, then General, then About This TV, then User Agreements.
- While you are in Privacy & Terms, also turn ON "Do Not Sell My Personal Information" if your set shows it.
Pass 3: Limit ad tracking
- Turn ON "Limit Ad Tracking." Look in one of these two places:
- General, then System, then Additional Settings, then Advertisement, then Limit Ad Tracking.
- Settings, then Support, then Privacy & Terms, then Advertising, then Limit AD Tracking.
- On means limited: the toggle restricts ad tracking rather than enabling it. In LG's own words, "When Limit AD Tracking is set to on, personalized advertisements based on user interests may not be provided." Read that carefully: it limits personalized ads. It does not guarantee an end to targeted advertising.
Menu labels and layout vary by model year, and older sets may not have every menu named here. If a label differs slightly, search the settings for the feature names above; the names are usually the same even when the path is not.
Traps to expect
- Two places, and both matter. Live Plus lives in the settings menus; the Viewing Information consent lives in the legal agreements. Stopping after Pass 1 is the most common way LG owners end up still tracked while believing they are done.
- Limit Ad Tracking reads backwards. On most devices, turning a tracking toggle on means more tracking. Here, ON is the private choice, because the feature being switched on is the limit.
- The agreements were probably accepted at setup. LG presents the User Agreements during initial setup, often as a bundle. Withdrawing Viewing Information later is how you undo that consent.
- Texas forced clearer consent. Texas sued LG over ACR collection, and LG settled with the Texas Attorney General on May 11, 2026, agreeing to a pop-up disclosure explaining viewing-data collection and a clear way to opt out. Those settlement terms apply in Texas; the steps above work anywhere.
What you lose
- Disabling viewing recognition and withdrawing the agreement may reduce personalization on the TV, such as recommendations based on what you watch.
- Limit Ad Tracking limits personalized advertising; per LG's wording above, personalized ads based on your interests may not be provided. You will still see ads.
- Watching itself is unaffected. Apps, inputs, and picture settings all work as before.
After / re-check
Software updates can change these menus, and LG owners have reported updates switching Live Plus back on. After a major update, re-check all three passes: Live Plus off, the Viewing Information agreement withdrawn, and Limit Ad Tracking still on.
Note that these steps cover tracking by the TV itself. Apps on the TV track you separately under their own policies; see the hub guide for the honest limits.
