How to cancel HBO Max

Step-by-step

On the web (fastest):

Go to max.com and sign in.
Select your profile icon (top right) → Subscription.
Select Cancel Subscription.
Select Continue to Cancel, then Yes, Cancel Subscription.

App differences: You can cancel in the Max mobile app: profile icon → Settings → Subscription → Manage Subscription → Cancel Subscription. The Max TV apps only show who bills you; use a browser or the mobile app to finish. Deleting any app does not cancel your subscription.

Cancel wherever the money leaves your account:

Billed through Apple: iPhone/iPad → Settings → your name → Subscriptions → Max → Cancel Subscription. Apple TV: Settings → Users & Accounts → [your name] → Subscriptions → Max → Cancel Subscription.
Billed through Google Play: Play Store → profile icon → Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions → Max → Cancel subscription.
Billed through Amazon (Prime Video Channels): Cancel in your Amazon account under Memberships & Subscriptions, or in Prime Video under Account & Settings → Channels.
Billed through Roku: Roku home → highlight the Max channel → press * on the remote → Manage subscription → Cancel subscription. Or my.roku.com → Manage account → Manage your subscriptions.
Billed through a cable or mobile provider: Cancel through that provider.

Traps to expect

The Sports add-on: If you have the B/R Sports add-on, it cancels when your base subscription expires, with a refund for remaining add-on days. Confirm it's gone on your next statement.
Multiple accounts: HBO Max logins proliferate across providers. Check the account email under profile → Account on each device you use, so you cancel the one that's actually billing you.
Annual plans: Canceling an annual plan stops renewal, but HBO Max does not refund the remaining months.

Retention offers

50% off for a few months: Some cancelers report being offered half-price HBO Max to stay. This is account-specific; there's no public page promising it. Verdict: if it appears, it's a decent deal for a service with a deep catalog. But it only makes sense if you'll actually watch; a paused subscription at any price is still a subscription.

After you cancel

You keep streaming until the end of your current billing period. No partial-month refunds.
Your profiles and watch history are expected to persist if you resubscribe with the same account, but HBO Max doesn't publicly commit to a timeframe.

Coming back

Sign back in at max.com and resubscribe. Any retention discount you were offered at cancellation is usually gone; new promos are whatever's public at the time.
