How to cancel Netflix
TL;DR
- Difficulty: 1/5
- Time estimate: 1 minute
Step-by-step
On the web (fastest):
- Go to netflix.com and sign in.
- Open the menu and select Account.
- Under Membership & Billing, select Cancel Membership.
- Select Finish Cancellation.
App differences: The Netflix mobile apps do not cancel in-app. Starting the process there opens a browser window to finish, so just use a browser. TV apps can't cancel either.
Billing-specific instructions:
Netflix cannot cancel a subscription it doesn't bill. Check who charges you first.
- Billed through Apple (iTunes/App Store): iPhone/iPad → Settings → your name → Subscriptions → Netflix → Cancel Subscription.
- Billed through Google Play: Play Store → profile icon → Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions → Netflix → Cancel subscription.
- Billed through a cable or telecom provider (Comcast, Verizon, T-Mobile, etc.): Cancel through that provider's account portal or support. Netflix support cannot do it for you.
Traps to expect
- Deleting the app doesn't cancel. Your billing continues until you cancel the membership itself.
- Extra members: If you added extra member slots, review them under Account. Removing the main membership ends the extra slots too, but double-check no separate charge lingers.
- Gift cards / promotional balance: Canceling does not refund unused gift-card balance. Use it up first if the amount matters to you.
Retention offers
Netflix generally doesn't discount to keep you. It keeps it simple:
- Change your plan: The cancel screen may offer a cheaper tier instead of leaving. Verdict: if you'll resubscribe within a couple of months anyway, downgrading to a cheaper plan beats paying full price. For a real break, cancel.
- Pause for one month: The cancel screen sometimes offers pausing instead of canceling. You can keep browsing and unpause anytime. Verdict: fine for a short break, but a clean cancel is better for a longer rotation.
After you cancel
- You keep watching until the end of your current billing period. Netflix does not cut you off early and does not refund partial months.
- Your profiles, viewing history, and preferences are saved for 10 months. Resubscribe within that window and everything is where you left it.
Coming back
Just sign back in at netflix.com and restart your membership. If it's been more than 10 months, you'll start fresh.
